2027 BMW F 450 GS vs CFMOTO 450MT: Which One Would You Actually Buy?

The lightweight adventure-bike category is getting seriously interesting.

CFMOTO has already made a big impression with the 450MT, while BMW is entering the same part of the market with the new 2027 F 450 GS.

On paper, they’re aimed at a similar rider: someone who wants a bike capable of road miles without ending up with a 220–250 kg adventure bike once the terrain gets difficult.

But when you look closer, BMW and CFMOTO have taken quite different approaches.

Around $6,500

BMW officially lists the 2027 F 450 GS at 48 hp, 19/17-inch wheels and 7.1 inches — roughly 180 mm — of suspension travel. The U.S. base MSRP is $6,995, while BMW currently shows a higher-spec version at $8,995. BMW says U.S. arrival is planned for Q1 2027. BMW Motorcycles

CFMOTO lists the 450MT with 32.5 kW — around 44 hp — 21/18-inch wheels, 200 mm front and rear suspension travel, and a 17.5-litre tank. Current U.S. listings for the equivalent IBEX 450 are around $6,499. CFMoto

One caution with weight comparisons: published 450MT/IBEX figures differ between markets and specifications, so I wouldn't base the entire comparison on a few kilograms either way.

Where the BMW F 450 GS Looks Strong

The BMW's biggest attraction to me is the combination of relatively low weight and 48 hp.

BMW quotes the F 450 GS at 392 lb road-ready and fully fuelled, which is around 178 kg. That's a very interesting number for an adventure bike that still has enough power to comfortably deal with faster road riding. BMW Motorcycles

There's also considerably more technology available.

Depending on specification, the F 450 GS can have features such as riding modes, Shift Assistant Pro, ABS Pro and BMW's new Easy Ride Clutch, which uses a centrifugal clutch to remove the need to operate the clutch lever when pulling away or riding at low speed. BMW Motorcycles

For riders doing a lot of road miles with occasional trails, the BMW could make a lot of sense.

But there are two numbers that immediately stand out to me:

19-inch front wheel.180 mm suspension travel.

And that's where the CFMOTO starts getting very interesting.

Where the CFMOTO 450MT Wins Me Over

Personally, if I'm buying an adventure bike that I'm genuinely going to use off-road, there are two things I really value:

A 21-inch front wheel and decent suspension travel.

The CFMOTO gives you both.

It has a proper 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel combination, along with 200 mm of travel front and rear. CFMOTO also lists 220 mm of ground clearance. CFMoto

That doesn't automatically make it a better motorcycle.

But when you're riding over rocks, through ruts or across rough terrain, those are specifications I personally want.

The BMW's 19-inch front could potentially make it feel sharper on the road, but if I'm choosing between the two before actually riding them, the CFMOTO's chassis specification is closer to what I'd choose for serious off-road use.

180 mm vs 200 mm Suspension Travel

Twenty millimetres doesn't sound like much.

But having spent a lot of time riding adventure bikes off-road, suspension travel is something I pay considerable attention to.

My Transalp is already around the lower limit of what I personally want from an adventure bike I'm going to ride aggressively off-road.

More travel doesn't automatically mean better suspension — spring rates, damping, geometry and suspension quality matter enormously — but additional usable stroke gives the suspension more room to deal with larger impacts before reaching the end of its travel.

For easier gravel and touring, 180 mm is probably plenty.

Start riding rocks, ledges, washouts and rough trails, and I'd rather have the extra travel.

19-Inch vs 21-Inch Front Wheel

This might actually be the biggest difference between them for me.

A 19-inch front wheel isn't incapable off-road. Far from it.

But a 21-inch front wheel rolls over obstacles more easily and is still the setup I personally prefer when the terrain becomes genuinely technical.

The CFMOTO therefore looks more dirt-focused straight out of the box.

BMW appears to have gone slightly further toward the road/off-road compromise.

Neither approach is necessarily wrong.

It depends entirely on what you're going to do with the bike.

What About Price?

This is where the comparison gets even more interesting.

The CFMOTO IBEX 450 currently sits around $6,499 in the U.S., while BMW lists the 2027 F 450 GS from $6,995, rising to around $8,995 for the higher specification currently shown by BMW. Dealer fees, destination, taxes and options can change the actual price considerably. BMW Motorcycles

At the base level, that's not an enormous gap.

But once options start getting added to the BMW, the CFMOTO could have a significant value advantage.

And that's probably where BMW has its biggest fight on its hands.

Chinese manufacturers aren't just selling cheap motorcycles anymore.

They're starting to produce bikes with specifications that genuinely compete with established European and Japanese manufacturers.

Which Would I Choose?

Based purely on the specifications — before riding either bike back-to-back — I'd probably lean toward the CFMOTO 450MT for the type of riding I personally do.

The reason is simple:

21-inch front wheel.200 mm suspension travel.

Those two things matter to me.

However, the BMW's 48 hp, low claimed weight and potentially more sophisticated electronics could make the F 450 GS the better motorcycle for someone who spends more time on the road while still wanting proper trail capability.

And that's why this comparison is so interesting.

One isn't simply the cheap version of the other.

They appear to be targeting slightly different interpretations of what a lightweight adventure bike should be.

And more importantly — why?
